Tiffiny Hall Day on a Plate: When we think of strong, empowered Aussie women – Tiffiny Hall springs right into our minds! She’s the author of 8 books, a martial arts expert and has even been a trainer on The Biggest Loser! We’re so excited to feature the divine Tiff on the blog today – celebrating the launch of her new program TIFFXO. Not to mention the delicious brekky recipe she has shared with us! Take it away Tiff…
* What was the ‘a-ha’ moment that inspired you to get in to health and wellbeing?
My parents are both Taekwondo instructors and run the largest martial arts schools in Australia. My father was an Olympic coach for Taekwondo and my mum was one of the first women in Australia to earn her black belt. They were always helping others to be healthier and more confident so I was lucky to grow up in a positive environment where the day started with green juices and Poomsae (Poomsae is like Tai Chi but the Taekwondo way of doing it!).
I’ve been teaching fitness and Taekwondo since I was 12 years old in my family Taekwondo school Hall’s Taekwondo. Whilst at university I was teaching in gyms, taking bootcamps, competing in Taekwondo at a National level and Instructing in the dojang. I couldn’t get enough. I’ve always dreamt of being able to train everyone, not just those living in Melbourne. I’ve lately seen a bit of decline in the participation of our adult programs at Hall’s and I know it’s because people have zero time. I’ve also seen the rise of untrustworthy, unqualified, inexperienced social media fitness and wellness gurus. It’s easy to post a selfie, but it’s not so easy to work with different bodies, different mindsets, on different socio-economic levels and deliver results every time.
I was always saddened when The Biggest Loser would end and my contestants would go home. I had done my job: helped them half their body weight, turn back the clock and reverse their body age, helped them to feel empowered and more confident. But then when they returned home they would regain weight. Not because they didn’t have the information. But because they didn’t have the support. That was my a-ha moment.
I really wanted to deliver a program that was supportive and personal. I really wanted the program to be about self love not punishment or deprivation. Self love is sustainable but self loathing is not. I’ve heard too many women hating themselves thin. Hence the XO (kiss and hug). It’s about me giving you some love and encouraging some self love, a little cuddle for the self goes a long way to staying motivated long term and feeling good.
* Tell us a little bit about yourself – who you are and what you do.
I’m Tiff, hi! I’m an author of 8 books, a trainer, a 6th Dan black belt Taekwondo expert and founder of online health and fitness program TIFFXO.COM. I also have my own activewear line Tiffiny Hall for FILA exclusively available in Harris Scarfe – no one has lived more in activewear than me! I’ve worked in TV for years from a winning trainer on The Biggest Loser to my current role as the health and fitness expert on The Living Room.
* Talk us through a typical day in your life – starting from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed – including what you would eat (main meals, snacks, drinks – we want to hear it all!) and any activity you might do. Feel free to include any pictures too.
My routine since falling pregnant has changed so much. I’ve been struggling with morning/all day sickness so I’m having to be very gentle with myself and listen to my body. It’s been very difficult to exercise.
Water, peppermint tea, coconut water, ginger anything at the moment.
I pretty much scroll through the recipes on my TIFFXO database and choose whatever I like. It’s all delicious!
I manage a walk in the morning and then if I’m filming TIFFXO workout videos then I do that during the day in short bursts of filming. I’m trying to fit in my Taekwondo classes at night, but I’m not participating in anything full contact any more of course – no sparring or free style self defence like I used to do. I concentrate on technique, boxing and stretching. I’m still kicking though.
* Coffee or tea?
I love coffee but now that I’m pregnant it’s peppermint tea.
* What is your indulgence of choice?
Right now being pregnant there are so many. Licorice! Mum’s homemade lasagne! Anything dry like biscuits, cake and lamingtons…(um, and TIFFXO’s Chocolate Crackle Slice is pretty good!)
* … And any last words of advice or tips for those starting out on their health journey?
I’d like to finish by saying fitness and wellness should feel good and be fun. It shouldn’t be about deprivation or punishment – 50 burpees for eating a chocolate biscuit. You have to do things in life that make you feel Happyfit.
* Three foods you can’t live without?
Grapefruits. Eggs. Hummus.
* What’s your go-to snack for those days on the run?
Maple-roasted cinnamon chickpeas. So easy. So fast. So delicious!
